In case of problems with gnome Network manager you could take a look on "wifi radar"
# sudo apt-get install wifi-radar
Please refer to: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/bcm43xx
Actually Broadcom 4318 based chip like 4311 rev.01 (Dell vendor use it on latest laptot) is partially supported.
Currently transmission problems limits this card at 11 Mbps speed. A fix on kernel 2.6.22 is right now working fine.
Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty actually support on 2.6.20 kernel but speed limitation.
Stay tuned!!!
As alternative could be used the deb packaged by cafuego (http://ubuntu.cafuego.net):
# sudo vi /etc/apt/source.list
add these lines:
# sudo apt-get install bcm43xx-firmware
# sudo modprobe bcm43xx
